My name is Melissa Allensworth. I suffered a T4 complete spinal cord injury due to a motor vehicle accident in 2008 at the age of 28. I was driving under the influence and flipped my truck leaving myself with a broken neck and back. I am very fortunate to be alive and have the use of my hands. I was on a downward spiral of drugs and alcohol at that time in my life, so this spinal cord injury saved my life. My accident was a wake up call to help me realize the way I was living wasn’t leading me in the right direction. I now have a daily reminder of how my decisions can affect the rest of my life. I am able to deal with my injury because I did it to myself. Had I injured or killed anyone else in my accident, my life would be a different story, and for that I am very grateful.
